Major Planning Projects

Runway Improvements

Duto the current length of the runway, many flights leaving Aspen cannot takeoff with full passenger loads.  Therefore, the airport is extending the runway toward Buttermilk by 1,000 feet. This extension will allow existing flights to accommodate more passengers, will result in greater efficiency and passenger convenience and will NOT result in larger jets flying into/out of the airport, which is prohibited by Pitkin County regulations. The Federal Aviation Administration will cover approximately 95% of costs. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2011.

Master Plan Update

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport’s Master Plan is a guide that will present a comprehensive overview of the Airport’s needs, including the timing and cost for proposed improvements, an analysis of financing options and a clear implementation plan. Airport master plans are typically updated every five to ten years. These updates will result in a refinement of the County’s long-range vision for the Airport.

Sustainability Program

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is dedicated to increasing sustainability at the airport. The Airport is in the process of creating an Evolving Sustainability Program that will focus on the primary goals of economic viability, operational efficiency, natural resource conservation and social responsibility. The program will include long and short term goals and metrics to measure the success of these goals as they are implemented.
